Our Mission

Members of our school staff are perpetual learners taking the opportunity for continuous professional development. Our teachers and paraprofessionals continue to learn how to support our students through The Science of Reading, including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and research-based curriculum to develop proficient readers. Through visual schedules, pictures, and communication devices we strengthen language development in non-verbal students. Teachers provide classroom practices that are culturally responsive, making learning contextual. Students are encouraged to connect text to their lives or the current moment. We foster the love of learning through exposure to curricula that include technology and the arts so that students can reach their full potential. Our students are always encouraged to participate in all District 75 celebrations to enhance their learning. We foster student advocacy whenever possible. Students are encouraged to be present and actively participate in the IEP continuum. We prioritize wellness and its impact on student success. Staff and students practice S.A.V.E.R.S from Miracle Morning to show up to situations successfully. We value and promote engagement and partnership with families and community members for our students to thrive.

All About The Walter Reed School

P9Q is a supportive, inclusive, and student-centered school dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of learners with special needs. As part of District 75, we are committed to fostering an environment where every student is respected, understood, and given the tools needed to succeed. Our school community spans seven sites across Queens, allowing us to provide individualized and meaningful educational experiences for students from Kindergarten through Grade 8.
At the core of our work is the belief that every learner can grow, achieve, and contribute meaningfully when provided with the right supports. Our educators use a range of evidence-based practices and targeted instructional approaches that honor each student’s strengths, address their unique challenges, and promote independence. With a caring and highly skilled team of professionals, we create a nurturing learning environment that builds confidence, communication, and lifelong skills.
In addition to academic instruction, we support students in developing functional, social-emotional, and daily living skills that prepare them for greater autonomy both in school and within the community. Through community-based learning, structured enrichment activities, and opportunities for real-world engagement, students practice the skills needed for meaningful participation in everyday life.
Family partnership is central to our mission. We work closely with caregivers through ongoing communication, school events, workshops, and opportunities for collaboration, recognizing that strong connections between home and school strengthen every learner’s path to success. At P9Q, we celebrate every achievement, honor every voice, and remain committed to empowering students to reach their greatest potential.
